It was a cold autumn night in 1969 when the lift doors at BBC Radio Merseyside's studios in Liverpool crashed open to reveal a wind-swept figure half hidden behind a pile of fragile 78 records. The figure stepped confidently forward and told the Programme Organiser he had an idea for a radio series which could not fail. The man was Frank Unwin. The programme was 'Music and Memories'. Frank's arguments were convincing. He had long felt that many Merseysiders would enjoy hearing the music they'd once listened to so many years ago when they switched on their radios at 10.30 p.m. to listen to an hour and a half of dance band music at its brightest and best. With equal enthusiasm the Programme Organiser grasped the idea, and agreed to give Frank and his programme a trial run-for six whole weeks. But Frank's sheer professionalism and the warm reception given to the programme by the listeners, soon meant that 'Music & Memories' was to become a permanent fixture in Radio Merseyside's schedules. The six weeks became six years, then seven, then ten, until now the programme is in its 14th year. The title of the programme, which has now achieved the distinction of being Britain's longest running big band record programme, speaks for itself-Music and Memories. Frank and his programme have helped rekindle those dormant memories of listeners who associate his music with some personal event in their own lives. Over the years they have written in their thousands-wonderful letters full of praise and appreciation. And Frank has in turn been able to share their memories-some happy and some sad-with other listeners. Much of the book is devoted, quite rightly, to the entertainment enjoyed in the 1920's and 30's, and especially the halcyon days of ballroom dancing on Merseyside. Spine slightly bumped but in good, clean and unread condition. Thanks for looking :)
