pierwsze wydanie z 1975 r., mały format - Leokadia Kościelna – sędziwa staruszka, której jedynym marzeniem jest spotkać się z córką i poznać wnuki. Wcale nie proste do zrealizowania, bo córka mieszka w Ameryce, a podróż kosztuje. Póki co jej jedyną „radością” są bezdomne koty, a jedynym przyjacielem – równie samotny, zgorzkniały i nieufny ludziom „Profesor”. Łączy ich samotność właśnie i umiłowanie do bezdomnych zwierząt. Leokadii nie dane jest doczekać wyjazdu do córki, wkrótce zostaje uduszona. Śledztwo prowadzi Sarnecki – rutyniarz, który zawsze idzie po linii prostej, a pomaga mu Downar. To właśnie subtelność, nieszablonowość i finezja Downara sprawia, że zabójstwo łączy się z nielegalnym handlem walutami i produkcją fałszywych dolarów. Teraz jedynie trzeba ustalić związek i odkryć prawdziwy motyw zbrodni. Zborowski serwuje czytelnikowi bardzo ciężki, duszny kryminał pełen dwuznacznych postaci. Mamy tutaj nieudaczników życiowych, wyrafinowanych cwaniaków, kobiety, które – choć młode – wiedzą, że przez życiowe wybory życie przegrały. Młodych mężczyzn, którzy nadal wierzą w księżniczki z bajki i tych, którzy w nic już nie wierzą. U autora próżno szukać sielskiego obrazu Warszawy, w której ludzie żyją skromnie, ale uczciwie, a nawet radośnie. Tutaj wszyscy walczą o minimum komfortu i – w większości – przegrywają. Sama intryga też trzyma bardzo wysoki poziom, z każdą kartą powieści przybywa postaci, a te nie prowadzą do rozwiązania zagadki, wręcz przeciwnie, sprawiają, że jest coraz bardziej zawiła. Nic nie jest takim jakim się wydaje, nawet motyw zabójstwa nie jest oczywisty, a sprawcy nie da się zaszufladkować.
