Fontanes Ballade hat das Dorf Ribbeck, vierzig Kilometer von Berlin gelegen, berühmt gemacht. Nach Öffnung der Mauer kommen Westberliner nach Ribbeck, um den Ribbeckern einen Birnbaum zu schenken und mit ihnen die deutsche Einheit zu feiern. Sie pflanzen den Baum wie eine Standarte in besetztes Gebiet neben das Schloss, das jetzt ein Pflegeheim ist, und fragen nicht nach der Vergangenheit. Auf dem Volksfest, wie es seit Jahrzehnten nicht mehr stattfand, mit Erbsensuppe, Freibier und Birnenschnaps aus dem Westen, verschafft sich ein Ribbecker Bauer Gehör. Zögernd zuerst erzählt er die Geschichte des Dorfes an der alten Heerstraße, erzählt von Feudalherren, Nazis und Soldaten im Zweiten Weltkrieg, den Etappen des Sozialismus bis zum Niedergang der Landwirtschaft. Er erzählt von den Herren im Dorf, dem letzten Ribbeck, der in das KZ Sachsenhausen kam, von der Roten Armee, den Parteibonzen und den Erben, die jetzt wieder das Dorf mit herrischen Schritten vermessen. Ein «Festredner», der gehört werden will und anerzählt gegen den Geschichts- und Gedächtnisverlust in sich selbst, seinem Dorf, seinem Land.
